Not Enough Time

Do you ever wish you had more time in your day? What would you do with an extra hour, or two, or perhaps five or six? Is it impossible to find time to do what brings you pleasure or to get caught up on various projects? For many it is but more than likely we can find time if we really want to.

A few weeks ago, I held a class discussion regarding social media. I asked my students to look and see how many hours they were spending on their phones daily. It ranged anywhere from an hour to seven. This time included social media, FaceTime, calls, messaging, YouTube, etc. The time spent was alarming and a wake-up call to many. I encouraged them to put their phones away for at least an hour. Their homework was to do something they felt they usually did not have time for during that time.

The next time we met, they shared what they had done during their newfound time. They painted, read, interacted with family, or played with their pets. They realized that the time was there, but they were not always using it to their advantage.

Our phones have taken over but are they at fault? No, we are! We have allowed them to rule over us, rather than use them as the useful tools they were meant to be. What should we do? Is it wise to throw them out the window and take our lives back? Of course not! It is all about balance. Our phones help simplify our lives. How would we get anywhere, or know what time it is without them? We should utilize them without them controlling us. I exhort you to put your phone down for at least an hour a day. Go for a stroll, read a book, take your dog for a walk, have an uninterrupted conversation with a loved one- without your phone!
