Eighteen years have passed since the day that changed our country forever. It has been so long, yet I can see the images vividly in my mind. It has been so long that our children are already learning about it from their History books. I will never forget the horror of realizing that our nation was under attack. I will never forget the sadness I felt for those whose lives were taken prematurely and for their loved ones. I felt helpless and all I wanted was to run to my child so no matter what happened we would be together. I called my mom, who was out of the country at the time. She was so worried for us and wanted us to leave. I reassured her by saying. "It's okay. We are not moving. We cannot be afraid and if I die, I will die holding my daughter's hand." The fear they tried to instill in us was palpable, but we remained strong.
I will never forget how those horrific acts brought people together, how we stood as one. In those dreadful moments, we knew that we did not stand a chance if we were divided. The solidarity was undeniable.
Time has passed and many have tried to divide our nation, but I realize that we are more united than ever. Don’t listen to the fake news, which says otherwise. Look around you, talk to people who are different from you, and you will see for yourself that we are in better shape than they would like us to believe. No, we will never forget and because of that we are stronger than ever. The United States of America can and will prevail!
