My kids were fighting the other day about something silly. I told my daughter to show her brother grace, because he was agitated, and needed to be loved. She responded, “It is hard to love him when he acts this way.” I encouraged her by saying that loving the lovable is easy but loving the unlovable is a real challenge. As she calmed down, I began to think about the significance of those words, and the impact that we as Christians can make if we love others the way God loves us.
The Bible exhorts us in 1 Peter 4:8 to “love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” What exactly does this mean? Should we forgive and forget, throw a veil over sin or trespasses and go about our way? No, this verse is not a free pass to sin, or an excuse, but a call to love. Love does not turn a blind eye, but rather exposes the sin while at the same time offering forgiveness.
What is love? God is love, therefore love is everything. It is infinite, forever, immeasurable. Love is, also, a decision, a choice. Love is not a feeling. Feelings can change dependent upon circumstances, but true unconditional love remains. As Christians, we must decide to love one another. We should not love based on the actions of others. Is it easy? Absolutely not, but it is necessary. Love with all your might, and do not wait- take the first step today!
